Relocation - House De Dorlodot
In March 2011, the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies moved to the historic ‘Huis de Dorlodot’ at Deberiotstraat 34 in Leuven. The Dorlodot building was completed in 1905 and served as the residence of canon and Professor Henry de Dorlodot, who after obtaining a doctorate in theology taught cosmology, natural sciences and subsequently geology and paleontology at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
The House de Dorlodot was designed by architects Theo van Dormael and Vincent Lenertz. Both architects worked under the supervision of Joris Helleputte, who introduced the neo-gothic tradition to Leuven. The House is therefore also characterized by this neo-gothic style, but notably infused with modern elements. It consists of three rows and three levels, whose floors can be recognized by the iron wall anchors on the outside of the building. The inside of the building houses several stone lancet arches, and some particularly picturesque rooms, which the recent renovation has brought out.
The room to the left of the entrance welcomes visitors with the word ‘Salve’ in an under-foot mosaic along with blue, red and gold painted flower patterns on the woodwork of the ceiling. The walls of the room are decorated with a colourful depiction of grape vines, and a mantelpiece portraying a city panorama. The walls surrounding the stairs are painted with a light blue and red trompe-l’oeuil lily motif, leading up to the chapel on the second floor. The wall paintings of the chapel are largely intact, and consist of three registers. The bottom red, brown and gold pattern is followed by text and topped off with an arch frieze of red, gold and white miter arches and medallions against a light green background. We cordially invite you to see for yourself this beautiful piece of history when visiting the Centre.

Lecture Minister Steven Vanackere
On Tuesday 15 March 2011, the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies hosted a lecture on Belgian foreign policy given by His Excellence Mr. Steven Vanackere, Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
During his lecture, Minister Vanackere used Fareed Zakaria’s The Post-American World (2008) to explore the main guidelines underwriting the Belgian diplomatic strategy. In his opinion, within a multipolar world, Belgian foreign policy should first establish its key interests and priorities - namely the European Union and Africa. Secondly, it should commit to international institutions and mechanisms, which itself implies a preference for a ‘community’ approach in the EU. Thirdly, it should continue to engage in relations with other countries - including those that do not share completely our core values – as well as seek new alliances. Fourthly, it should address problems through a variety of structures, including amongst other things, diplomacy, development and defense. The fifth guideline Minister Vanackere recommended was to respond to international challenges proportionately. Finally, Belgian foreign policy should continue to develop in a sustainable way, and function under a strong consensus in order to ensure its legitimacy.
The lecture was introduced by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Filip Abraham and concluded by a summary of the main points by the Director of the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies Prof. Dr. Jan Wouters. It was followed by a Q&A session moderated by Professor Dr. Patrick Develtere.

Tom Delreux receives EUSA Conference Paper Award
Tom Delreux, senior member of the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies and postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for International and European Policy, received the prize 'Best 2007 EUSA (European Union Studies Association) Conference Paper' for his paper 'The EU as a Negotiator in Multilateral Chemicals Negotiations: Multiple Principals, Different Agents'.
This paper, which is also published in Journal of European Public Policy examines if - and under which conditions - the European Union succeeds in speaking with a single voice in international environmental negotiations. Therefore, it analyses the relations between the European negotiator and the member states from a principal-agent perspective.
