Short Bio

Frederik Naert is Editor-in-Chief of the Military Law & Law of War Review / Revue de droit militaire et de droit de la guerre and a member of the Board of Directors of the International Society for Military Law & Law of War.

He was previously a legal advisor at the Belgian Ministry of Defence/Defence Staff (2004-2007), where he mainly worked on international humanitarian law issues, and a research and teaching assistant at the Leuven University (1998-2004).

His Ph.D. thesis is entitled ‘International Law Aspects of the EU’s Security and Defence Policy, with a Particular Focus on the Law of Armed Conflict and Human Rights’ (Leuven University, 2008) and an updated version thereof was published by Intersentia in December 2009 (ISBN 978-90-5095-771-7, xxviii + 682 p. He has published on European security organisations, peace operations, international humanitarian and human rights law, terrorism, European and international criminal law and international immunities. He has also lectured and spoken on these subjects at international conferences, for Belgian advisors in the law of armed conflict, at the NATO School, the College of Europe and in the framework of activities organised by the ICRC, the International Institute of Humanitarian Law and the European Security and Defence College. In June 2010, the Centre has been recognized as K.U.Leuven Centre of Excellence. Since then, it has launched a 7-year research programme on ‘Global Governance and Democratic Government’ (2010-2017), which aims at the construction of a new paradigm for democratic global governance.
