Short Bio

Dr. Sander Happaerts is a postdoctoral researcher at HIVA, KU Leuven. His research focuses on multilateral governance for natural resource use and sustainable materials management. Sander also coordinates the Flemish Policy Research Centre on Transitions for Sustainable Development.

Between 2007 and 2011 he worked as a researcher at the Institute for International and European Policy, KU Leuven. In 2010, he held a visiting fellowship at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM, Canada), where he joined the Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Research Chair. He obtained his PhD in 2011, with a dissertation on governance for sustainable development at the subnational level.

Sander holds a Master’s degree in International Relations and Conflict Management (2006) and in Romance Languages and Literature (2005). In 2006, he interned at the Permanent Representation of Belgium to the United Nations, where he assisted the Security Council team.

K.U.Leuven Centre of Excellence

In June 2010, the Centre has been recognized as K.U.Leuven Centre of Excellence. Since then, it has launched a 7-year research programme on ‘Global Governance and Democratic Government’ (2010-2017), which aims at the construction of a new paradigm for democratic global governance.
