Research

Fernando González is a PhD candidate and researcher at the Institute for International Law.  He graduated with honors (summa cum laude) from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and later on from the LL.M. program in International Legal Studies at New York University School of Law.  His professional experience includes practicing for several years in a Mexico City-based law firm, assisting U.S. and Canadian investors to conduct business in Mexico and pursue compensation claims under the Investment Chapter of NAFTA. 

Before joining the IIL and GGS research staff, Mr. González worked as a Junior Legal Officer in the Legal Affairs Division of the World Trade Organization where he assisted panelists in several international disputes involving the application of GATT and other WTO Agreements.  He is fluent in Spanish, English and French and is currently engaged in learning Dutch. He researches on international economic law issues, with a focus on WTO law and its relevance for emerging economies.

In June 2010, the Centre has been recognized as K.U.Leuven Centre of Excellence. Since then, it has launched a 7-year research programme on ‘Global Governance and Democratic Government’ (2010-2017), which aims at the construction of a new paradigm for democratic global governance.
