Research

Cliff Farhang (LL.M, Leiden Universiteit) is a full-time FWO Aspirant researcher. He will be preparing his PhD on long term management of nuclear waste and good governance. His research deals with substantive and institutional aspects of nuclear waste management within the European and International legal frameworks. The research will particularly focus on stakeholder participation, applicable environmental principles, nuclear liability regimes as well as the competences of the European Commission and the European Parliament in the field of nuclear waste management.

Prior to undertaking his research at K.U. Leuven, Cliff Farhang worked as an intern for the Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in the Haradinaj et al. and Gotovina et al. cases. His other fields of interest include the nuclear non-proliferation regime, international humanitarian law, and international criminal law of procedure applied by the ad hoc Tribunals and the International Criminal Court.

In June 2010, the Centre has been recognized as K.U.Leuven Centre of Excellence. Since then, it has launched a 7-year research programme on ‘Global Governance and Democratic Government’ (2010-2017), which aims at the construction of a new paradigm for democratic global governance.
