Short Bio

Antoon Braeckman (°1958) is co-director of RIPPLE. He is professor in contemporary political philosophy at the K.U.Leuven Institute of Philosophy, and co-ordinator of its Centre for Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy (CESPF). Over the years he published (in Dutch, English and French) on a variety of authors such as F.W.J. Schelling, Max Weber, Hans Blumenberg, Niklas Luhmann, Marcel Gauchet, Ulrich Beck, Alexis de Tocqueville, Jürgen Habermas, Thomas Mann, Chantal Mouffe, etc. and on equally divergent issues like the German romanticist reception of the French Revolution, charisma and rationality, pluralism in the age of individualization, reflexive modernization, Kant’s Enlightenment, democracy and the populist challenge, myth and modernity, bourgeois novelist art and irony, etc.

In June 2010, the Centre has been recognized as K.U.Leuven Centre of Excellence. Since then, it has launched a 7-year research programme on ‘Global Governance and Democratic Government’ (2010-2017), which aims at the construction of a new paradigm for democratic global governance.
