Programme

This interdisciplinary programme engages students to study Europe both as a transnational community and as an external actor in global governance. At the same time, the programme offers insight and knowledge about the functioning of Europe both in the contemporary world and in a historical perspective. Students acquire methodological and theoretical skills that enable them to describe and analyse Europe as a transnational community as well as an actor in an increasingly globalised world. Interaction with staff members of various disciplines and faculties (Social Sciences, History, Arts, Law, Economics, Theology) exposes students to a wide range of approaches to scientific study and research about Europe.

The programme emphasises strongly the need to engage in critical debate about the options and alternatives that confront Europe with respect to its internal, diversified identities and its interaction with other actors in the world.

The programme consists of a common part, four interdisciplinary modules, and a limited series of electives. The four modules are:

  • Transnational Perspectives on European History, Diversity and Culture
  • EU External Relations
  • Globalising Europe
  • Europe - Asia: Interactions and Comparisons

 (1) Transnational Perspectives on European History, Diversity and Culture focuses on how transnational movements and institutions function in a continent characterised by deep historical diversities; (2) EU External Relations analyses the external policies and relations of the European Union within the context of globalisation and new forms of global governance; (3) Globalising Europe investigates different dimensions of globalisation and their relevance for contemporary European society, politics and culture; (4) Europe – Asia: Interactions and Comparisons offers students the possibility to complement their European perspective with knowledge of developments in contemporary Asia.
